Colonial Knob: Top 12 Tracks No. 11
Looking for a view from the top? Then a walk up Colonial Knob (468 metres), Porirua's iconic mast-topped hill is for you.
There are three gravel tracks up the Colonial Knob area – all of them a challenging gradient. Mountain bikes are not permitted on Tracks A and C as these are designated scenic bush reserves.

Track A: Porirua Scenic Reserve Walk
This is a 1.8 kilometre climb through sheltered bush. Access is at the end of the cul de sac near the Camp Elsdon entrance. It is about 40 minutes walking one way to the top. The summit is a further 2.1 kilometre along Track B. This walk links to Track 15, Raiha Walkway. This route has steps and is not suitable for cyclists.
Track B: The Summit Track
This 4.05 kilometre route starts on Raiha Street and follows a steep 4 wheel-drive track through farmland with exotic and native bush regeneration. It is open to the elements. Beyond the point where Tracks A and B intersect, the track traverses the hilltops to give views across the city, rural hills, and out to Cook Strait up to DOC reserve gateway. The track is 1-2 hours walking one-way to the summit. Near the start at Raiha Street, you can link to the Porirua Central Business District via Track 15, the Raiha Walkway.
Track C: Rangituhi/Colonial Knob Scenic Reserve Walk
This is a 3.1 kilometre walkway with steps through native bush up to seven pines, then through open farmland up to the summit. It is roughly 1 hour 45 minutes walking one way to the summit. This walk links to Te Araroa route south, and passes historic water reservoirs and Spicer Botanical Park (Track 12). Access is from the car park at end of Broken Hill Road by the landfill gates.
We strongly recommend getting a map (the maps at this site are printable) before entering the Colonial Knob walkways. Remember to take plenty of food and drink, warm clothing, and a cellphone. The weather at the summit is often very different from that at the start.

Dogs are not permitted on any Colonial Knob track.
There are no facilities on this track.
All tracks are challenging. (Slopes greater than 12%.)
