This page describes the accessibility of information and documents on this website, and gives tips for viewing files and screen display.

Complying with standards

This website has been designed to comply, as far as practicable within the limitations of Porirua City Council's current content management system, with the World Wide Web Consortium's Accessibility Initiative and the New Zealand Government's Web Standards.  The website should be viewable in all main browsers on all operating systems, but if you cannot access any feature of our website, please let us know immediately so we can investigate it by phoning (04) 237 5089.  It may be your system does not have the software installed, or you are using a device which is not compatible with certain functionality.

Mobile web access

This website is also viewable on mobile devices such as iPhones, and iPads, but has not been specifically developed as a mobile website.  That will occur when the website content management system is replaced and redesigned in 2017.

Accessible documents and alternatives

Most documents published on this website are in PDF (portable document format).  Many printable forms also have a Word or RTF (rich text) alternative for completion on a computer.  These formats are not completely accessible as they cannot be provided in html format because of their nature and complexity, and the limitations of our systems at the present time.

Turning off style sheets

We are aware that some users may experience contrast issues. We suggest turning off style sheets in your browser to see a text-only version of this site.  Here's how to turn off Style Sheets in the various browsers:

Firefox (Win and Mac)
Via the menu toolbar, choose: “View” > “Page Style” > “No Style”
Via the Web Developer Toolbar, choose: “CSS” > “Disable Styles” > “All
If the Web Dev Toolbar is installed, people can use this keyboard shortcuts:
Command + Shift + S (Mac)
Control + Shift + S (Win)

Safari (Mac)
Via the menu toolbar, choose “Develop” > “Disable Styles”

Opera (Win)
Via the menu, choose “Page” > “Style” > “User Mode”

Chrome (Win)
Via the gear icon, choose the “CSS” tab > “Disable All Styles”

Internet Explorer 8
Via the menu toolbar, choose “View” > “Style” > “No Style”

Internet Explorer 7
via the IE Developer Toolbar menu: Disable > All CSS

Internet Explorer 6
Via the Web Accessibility Toolbar, choose “CSS” > “Disable CSS”

Change text sizes

You may be able to increase the size of the text on screen.  Here's the instructions for all the mainstream browsers:

Internet Explorer 7/8/9/10/11 (Windows)
Select the 'Page' menu, then 'Text Size', and then your chosen size (or if you have a mouse wheel simply hold down CTRL and roll the mouse wheel to alter the text size).  Or Alternatively CTRL plus Plus sign or CTRL plus Minus sign.

Internet Explorer 6.0 (Windows)
Select the 'View' menu, then 'Text Size', and then your chosen size (or if you have a mouse wheel simply hold down CTRL and roll the mouse wheel to alter the text size).

Select the 'View' menu, then 'Zoom. Alternatively select CTRL plus Plus sign or CTRL plus Minus sign.

Select the 'Page' menu, then 'Zoom', and then select the percentage increase or decrease you require. Alternatively select CTRL plus Plus sign or CTRL plus Minus sign to increase or decrease by 10%.

Safari  (Mac)
Select the 'View' menu, then 'Make Text Bigger' or 'Make Text Smaller'. Alternatively select Apple plus Plus sign or Apple plus Minus sign.

Select  CTRL plus Plus sign or CTRL plus Minus sign.  Or check the Chrome accessibility settings on the Chrome Keyboard Shortcuts page

PDF Reader

Most documents on this website are in PDF format.  Download a free Portable Document Format (PDF) reader from the Adobe website.

The file size of all downloadable documents are indicated in the introductory text or next to the download file link.

It's a good idea to save large documents to your computer after downloading so you don't have to come back to the website to download it again, especially if you are on a slow connection.
