Residential Opportunities

As part of the revitalisation of the city centre, Porirua City Council wants to actively encourage and support the developments of residential accommodation in the city centre. As a young city, Porirua has significant growth potential and needs to provide residents with increased varieties of residential accommodation.

The city centre provides potential residents with a great deal of amenity that they would not find in any other location in the city including:

  • Great access to food and retail outlets
  • Easy walk to the railway station
  • Easy access to Pataka and Te Rauparaha Arena
  • Convenient access to Porirua Harbour
  • Easy access to a variety of walking and mountain biking tracks

The proposed development of up to 600 new homes on part of the Kenepuru Hospital site will be a great first step and will include a mixture of medium density housing options via a joint venture between Ngati Toa and Carrus Group. In addition the Council is currently working with preferred parties on the conversion of the old Post Office building into apartment units and making land available to the south of the city centre for high density accommodation.

If you’re a developer interested in developing residential accommodation in the Porirua city centre, there are a number of incentives available to encourage the development of new good quality residential accommodation including:

  • Development Contributions - waived
  • Resource Consent Fees - waived
  • Building Consent processing fees - discounted by 50%
  • Rates waived for five years from the time of uplifting the code compliance certificate
