According to BERL, the property services industry represented almost one seventh of Porirua’s GDP. Education, the largest employer in the city, accounted for 8.8 percent, while the business services industry was next largest. Health services and finance each contributed around 7 percent.

Porirua is recognised as the top knowledge economy out of New Zealand’s 73 local authorities, according to Department of Labour research on the New Zealand Knowledge Economy (May 2009).
This reflects the fact that Porirua is a city with industries and occupations that are primarily based on highly skilled employment and sophisticated production. Porirua has a significant number of public knowledge intensive services, with over 15 per cent of its total employment in knowledge intensive sectors.
A further report by Property Economics (Porirua City Industrial Activity Review, June 2008), an independent advisory firm integrating skills and experience in market analyses, urban planning and economic, on future growth suggested Porirua City's employment is projected to grow in these key areas:
