This section outlines what’s great about Porirua City – the people, the place, the businesses and gives you some ideas of things to do while you are here.
Welcome from the Mayor
Welcome to our website. Porirua City is a vibrant, diverse, exciting city and we want to share it with you.
Porirua City Mayor Nick Leggett shows off Porirua's awards and celebrates the city's wins at the International Awards for Liveable Communities.
You just can’t top the relaxed lifestyle Porirua City has to offer. The city overlooks a stunning harbour and includes 54 km of coastline. Equally as impressive are our rolling hills offering a rural lifestyle. You’ll hear locals often remark that when they get home they feel like they are on holiday – and it’s true.
If your mood is for more active pursuits there is a variety of water sports, numerous challenging or scenic cycleways and walkways. Our colourful city centre features the new Te Rauparaha Arena, our Aquatic Centre, and Pataka – which is among New Zealand’s leading museums of Maori, Pacific and New Zealand contemporary art.
Hand in hand with the terrific lifestyle is the fact that Porirua is a great place to raise a family. We offer children the traditional Kiwi lifestyle with easy access to lots of fun outdoor activities, a real community spirit and plenty of opportunities for truly independent play.

If it’s business or investment you’re interested in then Porirua has many business advantages. There are opportunities for business and investors including plenty of commercial land ripe for development as well as a diverse, stable workforce, easy access to the rest of the country by road (on State Highway 1) and rail and the benefit of being just 20 minutes from the Capital City.
Once again, welcome to virtual Porirua, take some time to find out more about our city – and if you're not already a resident, we hope when next you visit, it'll be for real!
