Food Premises - Change of Ownership

This page explains the process for notifying changes of ownership of food premises under the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974.

Councils must be notified about change of ownership of food premises

All changes of ownership of registered food premises must be notified to Council within fourteen working days of the change being effected.

The new owner is responsible for doing this.

Notifying change of ownership

To notify Council of a change in ownership, print off the Notification of Change of Ownership form from our Health Forms page, complete it and submit it to Council’s Customer Services Centre with the required fee.

Food Safety Programme (FSP) premises

If you are taking over premises currently operating under a Food Safety Programme, you will need to contact the New Zealand Food Safety Authority for advice.

If you do not continue with the FSP, you will then need to register your premises with Council.
