Civil Defence Centres
This page contains information on civil defence centres, emergency shelters, and recovery assistance centres in Porirua.
Civil defence centres
In a major disaster or emergency, civil defence centres are activated by volunteers.
The centres collect information about the impact of an emergency and pass that information to the Porirua Emergency Operations Centre. You can also go there to get information about what is happening. There is very little equipment at civil defence centres, so residents should plan to be able to look after themselves.
Centres can be found in some primary schools, or other community locations like community centres. Make a note of your nearest civil defence centre location in your household emergency plan.
In an emergency, listen to your local radio station to hear which centres are open. If it is a small localised event, we may only need to open one nearby.

Emergency shelters
When and where there is a need, emergency shelters may be set up near affected areas to accommodate you for a short time if you can no longer stay in your home because of an emergency. These may be the halls or other facilities, like churches or community centres that can give you a roof over your head for the night. You will be advised where they are as soon as they are available.
We would like you to stay with family or friends if at all possible – you will be much happier staying with the people you know and care about. Go to an emergency shelter only if there is no other choice.
Recovery Assistance Centres
Recovery Assistance Centres may be set up in central locations. The centres provide face-to-face service and are a “one-stop shop” of government, local government and non-government organisations which may include:
- Work & Income
- Housing NZ
- Porirua City Council
- Red Cross
- counselling support services
- other supporting agencies
