Dog Care and Welfare

The New Zealand standards for dog and animal welfare and safety are set in legislation by the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

You must ensure:

  • The physical health and behavioural needs of your dog or dogs are met in accordance with good practice and scientific knowledge; and 
  • your dog or dogs receive treatment to alleviate unreasonable and unnecessary pain or distress.

Reporting dog abuse

Report animal abuse to:

  • The Royal Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) on telephone (04) 389 8044; or
  • The Police in serious cases
