Death of Dog

This page describes what you must do if your dog has died.

If your dog has died or been put down, you must notify us as soon as practicable.  Phone us on (04) 237 5089.

Destruction of dog

If your dog has been destroyed under a Court Order, you must produce a certificate from a veterinarian surgeon, Animal Control Officer or Ranger, confirming the dog has been destroyed.

Putting down of dog

We offer a service of putting down a dog if it is old, sick or aggressive.  Contact us to arrange an appointment to discuss this.  You will need to pay a Dog Destruction fee.

Refund of Fees

You may be eligible for a partial refund of your registration fees when your dog dies or is put down.

Application must be made before the start of the 1 July registration period.

To apply for a refund, take your current dog registration tag and proof of death (veterinarian euthanasia certificate) to our Customer Service Centre, 16 Cobham Court, Porirua.
