Animal Welfare and Care

This page has information about owners' responsibilities towards caring for their animals.

Owners Responsibilities

Animal owners are required under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 to provide for the physical, health, and behavioural needs of their animals, including food, water, shelter and exercise.

You should provide daily feed and fresh water to all animals.

If you have lost your pet, check the Pets on the Net or Lost Pet Finder websites.  Neighbourly community pages also list lost and found pets.

Reporting animal abuse

Incidents of abuse, cruelty, mistreatment or malnourishment of any animal should be reported to either:

  • the Royal Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), phone (04) 389 8044
  • and/or the Ministry of Primary Industries, phone 0800 00 83 33
